BBC iPlayer Goes Social

Article taken from Tech Crunch

BBC iPlayer adds Twitter and Facebook to socialise TV

The BBC’s video on demand service, iPlayer is introducing social networking features which should further boost the uptale of Twitter and Facebook in the UK – as if they needed any boosting. The new iPlayer Beta is set to go live officially at the end of June.

Twitter, Facebook and Windows Live Messenger will be linked to a user’s “BBC ID” which they get when they register on BBC.co.uk. Users will be able to share what they’re watching over social networks (queue lots of “Watching Britains Got Talent” updates) while Windows Messenger will show in real-time how many minutes a user is in to a program on iPlayer and allow them to sync viewing with friends and chat about the show in realtime. The features will also work for BBC radio stations.

Quite why the BBC went for Messenger is so far unexplained. It does have a lage UK uptake. But it’s worth noting that tech supremo Eric Huggers is an ex-Microsoft executive.

iPlayer will also now have customisable modules which can be moved around by the user, similar to Google’s iGoogle page. A new recommendation system will suggesting programs based on viewing habits, Tivo-like and will even suggest content from rival channels like ITV Player, 4OD, Clic, SeeSaw and Demand Five. No Sky as yet, who are considering their options.

Google Launches web-TV service

We’ve been saying it all along…

It was only a matter of time before your TV and your computer merged into one multi media online viewing experience.

We already have Apple TV which is a closed system but now the mighty Google have stepped in with a more “Open” system and done deals with Sony and Logitech allowing users to use the internet while watching TV.

So what impact will this have?

In the very near future, the majority of people will be surfing the net via their TV. Are they going to to want to read text and  stare at static pictures when they land on your site?

Unlikely…

They’re going to want to sit back and “watch” websites like they are doing with their favourite content. They’re going to want to share what they like on facebook, twitter, etc.

So put your video thinking caps on and start contemplating these future customer surfing habits.

The couch potato, remote in hand, is coming to your site soon.

What do you want them to see?

Internet World 2010

So I managed to get down to Internet World 2010 at Earls Court to check out how the online video scene was being represented this year.

I was pleasantly surprised. There seemed to be about 4 or 5 online video production stands down there (I won’t say who… cause they’re competition right). Only 1 was offering any kind of end to end solutions including hosting though. I just think that being able to offer hosting as well as production is pretty key when it comes to delivering online video. None of our clients have expressed any interest in having to sort out hosting for themselves, as it’s such a mine field. Glad we’ve gone the CMS route which makes it super easy for us and our clients.
It’s good to see that there is more of an online video industry developing though and importantly people seemed to be getting decent interest. We will almost certainly think about doing an Internet World trade show sooner or later.

Despite the internet being the greatest market place of all, people still want to do business face to face.
